Juandertal -'s profile

Homo habilis. Human evolution project.

The first member of the human genus. Lived in east Africa 2,4 to 1,65 Milion years ago. Homo habilis is the author of the Oldowan lithic technology or Mode 1, which already included blades of several sizes and uses, hammers, awls and scrappers. The applications of this ample toolkit are often imagined as limited to scavenging and gathering (cracking open bones and nuts). But with their human-like hands and presumed psychomotor capabilities, I consider very reasonable that Homo habilis crafted an even bigger kit of tools and utilities with perishable materials, from which sadly we may never find any trace due to its antiquity.
The body size and proportions of this species is barely different from that of Australopithecus, but the brain is bigger and we can presume important differences on their lifestyles.
